Wondering if Morrowind's Game of the Year edition on the original Xbox still holds up? We break down what you get, the condition realities, and whether it's worth adding to your retro collection.
Quick answer
Yes, if you want a massive, deep RPG experience on original hardware. The GOTY edition includes all official expansions, but expect a disc-only copy that may show minor wear.
The disc-only reality
Many retro game listings leave condition vague. For The Elder Scrolls III GOTY on Xbox, the catalog explicitly states it includes the disc or cartridge only. That means no original case, manual, or map. If you are a collector seeking a complete-in-box set, this copy will not satisfy that need.
Why the GOTY edition matters
The Game of the Year edition bundles the base game with the Tribunal and Bloodmoon expansions. On original Xbox, these add significant content that extends an already enormous playthrough. For players who want the full Morrowind experience on one disc, this version is the definitive choice.
Verdicts
- Claim: The GOTY edition is just the base game with a new label.: False. The GOTY edition includes the Tribunal and Bloodmoon expansions on the same disc, adding hours of quests and a new faction.
- Claim: A disc-only copy is not worth buying.: Depends on your goal. If you just want to play Morrowind on original hardware, a tested disc-only copy is the most affordable way. If you need a complete collectible, look for a separate listing that specifies case and manual. Check the listing details carefully: disc-only is for players, not collectors.
- Claim: The game is too dated to enjoy today.: Subjective, but the open-ended quest design and deep skill system still offer a unique experience that modern streamlined RPGs rarely replicate. The NTSC version runs at 480p on original Xbox hardware. If you enjoy player-driven stories and stat-heavy progression, Morrowind remains rewarding.
